McCONNELL & NEURODYNAMICS
INTRODUCTION
Here is your opportunity to learn highly effective and evidence based manual therapy and taping techniques from leading professionals. You will achieve immediate results for your patients to restore function and relieve pain for many of the commonly occurring musculoskeletal disorders that you see every day.
BENEFITS OF ATTENDING McCONNELL AND NDS COURSE
Participants will have:
- New skills that they can immediately put into practice
- A frame work for biomechanical assessment of a patient with musculoskeletal/neurodynamical problems
- An ability to provide patients with simple strategies so they can manage themselves
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
There is no pre-requisite in terms of manual therapy or neurodynamical therapy experience. The course offers a high level of information and clinical expertise, providing all participants regardless of previous clinical experience and knowledge with a stimulating learning environment.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Upper Limb seminar: McConnell and Neurodynamic Concepts
Learn how the static and dynamic posture of the upper extremity may contribute to the patient's signs and symptoms at the shoulder. This program includes a review of shoulder biomechanics and will examine the influence of thoracic spine stiffness, muscle tightness and muscle control problems on shoulder girdle movement. Numerous intervention strategies will be discussed. There is an extensive lab component teaching Jenny McConneell’s shoulder taping and muscle training techniques, using superficial EMG. Learn treatment strategie sto address impingement, frozen shoulder, anterior translation of the humeral head, and multi-directional instability.
At the same time, Michael Shacklock’s ideas will be implemented for neurodynamical problems. The Shacklock concept helps the therapist select and perform new diagnostic and treatment techniques without provoking symptoms and progresses from the highly restricted patient to the atlete.
At the completion of the course you will be able to:
- discuss ideal shoulder posture and muscle function
- evaluate glenohumeral and scapular position and thoracic spine stiffness
- mobilize a stiff thoracic spine
- learn methods of activating lower and middle fibers of trapezius and serratus anterior
- tape to attain more appropriate alignment of the shoulder
- tape to unload painful structures: hypersensitive neural tissue
- use surface EMG for neuro-muscular re-education
- design a home exercise program
- new neural testing and treatment techniques: palpate median, ulnar and radial nerve in some areas of the upper limb
- perform some neurodynamic tests for median, ulanr and radial nerve
- new systematic diagnosis and treatment approach; integration of neural techniques with the musculoskeletal system
- systematic progressions from low to high levels of sensitivity
- Applied to Specific Disorders Cervical:
- radiculopathy and cervicobrachialgia
- Thoracic outlet syndrome
- Lateral and medial elbow pain
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
Docent
Alfio Albasini is a physiotherapist who graduated in 1991 at the School of Physiotherapy in Basel Switzerland. In 1995 he did his Post Graduate Diploma in Manual Therapy in Perth WA, at the Curtin University of Technology.
Since 1996 he treated his patients in his own clinic in Bellinzona, Ticino Switzerland, and he teach, part-time, Manual Therapy at the School of Physiotherapy, USI, Università della Svizzera Italiana.
Since 1997, after being assistant for three years in Zurzach, Centre of Post Graduate Courses in Switzerland, for the Maitland Concept, he became officially McConnell Instructor. He now teach the McConnell Concept in different countries in the world, like South America, South Africa, Middle East and Europe in four different languages.
Since 1999, he is Instructor at the Swiss Association of Soccer (SFV) as an expert in physiotherapy of sport medicine.
Since 2006, Alfio is personal assistant of Michael Shacklock, NDS, Neurodynamic Solutions, in different workshops in the world and he can teach his method since the beginning of 2009.
Alfio is member of Research and Development (Clinical Excellence Circle), Otto Bock Health Care since 2006.
In 2005 and in 2009 he was the principal chairman of the scientific committee and organizer of the first and second world Manual Therapy Congress, “The Spine” held in Roma, Italy.
He has been invited internationally in numerous congresses in the world as a speaker and for different workshops and seminars.
Since 2007, Alfio works together with Kim Robinson and Toby Hall, fellows from Manual Concept and Curtin University, teaching at their program, “The Certificate”.
In 2009, Alfio was invited at the head quarter of Real Madrid to present a six days course divided in several sections to the medical team.
In October 2009, his first book was presented at the Edinburgh Conference of Kinetic Control: Using Whole Body Vibration in Physical Therapy and Sport. Elsevier Churchill Livingstone
In June 2010, Alfio was invited from the Patella Study Group, to present at the ESSKA Congress in Oslo Norway, Conservative Management of Patello Femoral Pain.
In November 2010, he was invited at the National Congress of Manual Therapy in Amsterdam (Holland), to present NDS for Michael Shacklock.
In February 2011, Alfio was invited at the JFK, National Manual Therapy Congress in Marseille (France) to present the McConnell Concept.
